Tips & Ideas For Dressing Your Postpartum Body

After I had my second little guy, it was extremely hard to lose the baby weight. To be honest, I’m 14 months postpartum and I’m still not where I’d like to be, but I want to share the 2 main things that have helped me to love my body where I’m at.

The first is, Positive talk!!

I continually remind myself that my body grew 2 tiny humans for a little less than a year each. Not only that, my body nourished and sustained those tiny little humans for 9-12 months more! One thing I say to myself over and over when I am tempted to speak negatively about my body is, “it took 9 months to grow these sweet babes, it will take at least 9 months to get “back” to where we started. I am still continuing to practice this positive way of thinking and speaking to myself. It’s so easy to put myself down but if I do that, then what example am I setting for my kiddos about how to view their own bodies? Those reminders truly help put things into perspective!

The second thing that has helped is, get ready for it!!… Get a NEW postpartum wardrobe! Even if it’s just a few select pieces that you can where over and over! It makes SUCH a huge difference.

Not having any of my clothes fit was super discouraging. The maternity clothes I had were too big but my pre pregnancy clothes were too small. Calling them my “skinny clothes” just reinforced this degrading way of viewing myself but I was stuck in this awkward in between stage. Almost like the first trimester when you’re pregnant but you don’t really look it because really you’re just bloated and a little pudgey, so if someone asks (which they shouldn’t because come on guys! It’s rude!), but when they ask, they approach it like they’re walking on egg shells. Yeah, that’s the stage I feel like comes back around to haunt me at about 1-2 months postpartum. Like oh hey there little pooch, way to make me look like I’m just stashing away all the extra cookies.

By the way, I think women’s bodies are incredible and it’s so easy for me to look at any other new Mama with awe and wonder at the miracle she just took part in. But for some reason I have a harder time looking at myself in the same light. I’m not in any way saying you have to go crazy buying a ton of clothes and that it’s going to miraculously make you feel better. But for me, it helped! It helped to not stare at my pre pregnancy clothes and keep saying “well, when I fit in these again” or “I’ll never fit in these again”. I was just causing myself more heartache.

Getting a new postpartum wardrobe personally helped me to accept the stage I was in while allowing myself to feel good in my own skin. That being said, I personally bought a few Spring outfits that would be great for pregnancy and postpartum! They will also be great for the cooler weather come Fall! Since we would like to have more kids in the future, I bought clothes with that in mind. Getting multiple uses out of my pieces is a win win in my book, especially because I hate spending a ton of money on clothing. I’d much rather spend $100 on multiple pieces than spend $100 on one piece of clothing.

Just for reference I am 5’4″ ish.. (doctors can’t decide if I’m 5’4″ or 5’5″ HA) and 155lbs. I am normally a size Medium in tops but typically will buy Large because I prefer a more loose look. Usually in pants, I am a size 8 or 9 depending on fit. With all that being said, here are 4 of my favorite outfits!

Sweater Size: L | Amazon, High Waisted Jeans Size: 8 | Target
This is one of my favorite sweaters and I practically live in it now! Also high waisted jeans are a Godsend! I will never go back!
Black Top Size : M | Amazon, High Waisted Jeans Size: 8 | Target
This top is so cozy. It’s ruching is really flattering and it has a cute side synch that gives it the look of being tucked in without needing to be. I recommend staying true to size on this one as it is already a looser fit.
Red Top Size: M | Amazon, High Waisted Jeans Size: 8 | Target
Same top but in red! On the site the photo displays it as more of a heather red, but in person it looks more deep red.
Pink Top Size: L | Amazon, Faux Leather Pants Size: L | Amazon, Necklace | Amazon
And finally a nice dressed up date night look! Giving me all the Sandra D vibes. I do not recommend the leggings for pregnancy but they do a pretty great job of sucking it all in! I love the meshing detail on this shirt! I also own it in white but I highly recommend wearing a nude bra under both and a cami under the white as it is pretty sheer.

Mama! You are beautiful and I know it is hard sometimes to truly love and feel good about the way you look, but just remember, your body grew that sweet little babe/s. Be kind to yourself and I will do my best to follow my own advice!
